In 1923 Rietveld received a commission to make chairs for the Catholic Military Barracks in Utrecht. A stool and table were also created, based on the design for this chair. The uprights and rails of this furniture are sturdier than with the slat furniture. With some of the joints the components are partly let in to each other and subsequently joined with nuts and bolts. These adjustments to the construction method made the joints stronger than with the slat furniture.
