Illustrations of interiors and furniture from past centuries
In the Treasury of the Library Learning Centre
In the Treasury there is a display of books and illustrations showing examples of chairs and interiors from the past centuries. Rietveld must have sat on chairs such as these when he was young, but his own designs were radically different. Van de Groenekan – an important employee of Rietveld’s – also mentions this: ‘When I first saw Rietveld’s drawings, I was surprised. At home we had those mahogany chairs with upholstered seats and curved legs…’ The exhibits also include a textbook on architectural styles that Klaarhamer, Rietveld’s teacher, used to explain carpentry joints.
