TU Delft Library

The building

TU Delft Library receives a lot of questions about our main building. This page contains additional information on this unique design.

Design by Mecanoo

The imposing TU Delft Library building was designed by the architects firm Mecanoo. It is actually much more than a building: it is also a whole landscape.

Symbol of technology

The grass area is raised at one point and supported by columns. The large hall that this creates has been fitted with glass facades. In the centre of the slope, there is a gentle staircase leading towards the entrance. An enormous cone protrudes through the grass roof which can be walked on. The cone is a symbol of technology and lends shape to the circular, introverted reading rooms.

Enormous bookcase

The books are stored in an enormous bookcase, which stretches from the ground floor to the ceiling of the fourth floor. The books, journals and computers are positioned to take full advantage of the passage of light.

Energy-efficient grass roof

The building is also energy-efficient. The grass roof has an insulating effect and counteracts excessive temperature fluctuations. The vegetation absorbs rainwater. As this water gradually evaporates in the summer, this has a natural cooling effect. Finally, the grass roof provides excellent sound installation.

Cold and heat storage

Instead of unsightly cooling equipment on the roof, cold storage in the groundwater is used to keep the building cool. It also keeps it warm, when necessary. This technology helps conserve energy. It is only in the study room, where the computers produce so much heat, that separate cooling is required. For this reason, the room is situated to the north of the building and fitted with a virtually invisible cooling ceiling.

Climate control facades

The facades have a double glass panel through which air is circulated. In the winter, the offices remain comfortably warm and they stay pleasantly cool in the summer. This obviates the need for radiators, enabling work spaces to be sited directly next to the glass. This also allows efficient use of space.
