What are the advantages of Open Access?
Higher citation impact
Open Access publishing brings important advantages not only for the user or reader, but also for the researcher such as an increased citationscore. Provision through Open Access gives publications in existing journals a wider electronic dissemination. This renders research more visible, potentially leading to more frequent citation, and can thus promote or accelerate international recognition
Research collated in “The effect of open access and downloads ('hits') on citation impact: a bibliography of studies” seems to indicate that non-subscription articles available free of charge worldwide are downloaded and cited much more frequently.
The solidarity principle
Science benefits strongly from the results of research being quickly made available to everyone. The Open Access movement first arose from the solidarity principle: the redistribution of knowledge and sources, irrespective of the country or organisation to which one belongs.
More efficient dissemination of knowledge
The (academic) world benefits hugely from a rapid, wide and effective dissemination of the results of scientific research. After all, this research always constitutes a further development of the ideas and knowledge of others. Now the Internet makes it possible to render research results accessible quickly and worldwide, in the form of electronic publications. But that’s not all: the electronic form also enables effective (re)use of the published material. Open Access makes the dissemination of knowledge much more efficient.
Free access for the user
Scientific information is available to everyone and not just to those who have paid for access to the various journals. So for the users Open Access means that the price barrier is removed because they can access the publications free of charge. Accessibility is not restricted by the budget of the library or the wealth of the country where the researcher lives and works.

Voordelen van Open Access?
Hogere citatie
Open Access publiceren heeft belangrijke voordelen voor de wetenschapper, bijvoorbeeld een hogere citatiescore. Door Open Access beschikbaarstelling krijgen publicaties in bestaande tijdschriften een bredere elektronische verspreiding. Onderzoek wordt zo beter zichtbaar, met in potentie een frequentere citatie, en kan daardoor eerder internationale erkenning krijgen. Uit het onderzoek ‘The effect of open access and downloads ('hits') on citation impact: a bibliography of studies’ blijkt dat artikelen die zonder abonnement wereldwijd gratis toegankelijk zijn, veel vaker worden gedownload en geciteerd.
Solidariteitsbeginsel
De Open Access beweging is gestart vanuit het solidariteitsbeginsel: het delen van kennis en informatiebronnen, los van land of instelling waartoe men behoort.
Efficiëntere verspreiding van kennis
De (wetenschappelijke) wereld is gebaat bij een snelle, brede en effectieve verspreiding van resultaten van wetenschappelijk onderzoek. Dat onderzoek bouwt immers steeds voort op de ideeën en kennis van anderen. Internet biedt de mogelijkheid om onderzoeksresultaten in de vorm van elektronische publicaties snel en wereldwijd toegankelijk te maken. Maar dat niet alleen: de elektronische vorm maakt het mogelijk om het gepubliceerde materiaal effectief te (her)gebruiken. Door 'open access' wordt die verspreiding van kennis veel efficiënter.
Gratis toegang voor de gebruiker
Voor de gebruiker betekent Open Access dat de prijsbarrière wegvalt, doordat de publicaties gratis toegankelijk zijn. De toegankelijkheid wordt dus niet beperkt door het budget van de bibliotheek of de rijkdom van het land waarin de onderzoeker zich bevindt: de wetenschappelijke informatie is beschikbaar voor iedereen.
